A safe and effective way to accelerate your Horse's healing.
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a procedure that delivers increased amounts of oxygen
to diseased or injured tissues. It is currently one of the most powerful
tools available as an adjunctive form of therapy, and in some cases
it works well as the primary therapy for horses. Oxygen is delivered
to the patient under pressure by placing the horse inside of a
special Hyperbaric Chamber. The procedure concentrates the oxygen
available in the air breathed by
the horse,
which allows
more
oxygen
to be dissolved into the blood plasma and delivered to the injured
or diseased tissues.
The amount of oxygen that red blood cells can carry is limited with normal atmospheric
pressure, meaning that only a small amount of oxygen is dissolved
back into the plasma. As the pressure of the oxygen is increased
in the hyperbaric chamber, the amount of oxygen being inhaled increases
by 10 to 12 times. The hemoglobin in the red blood cells quickly
becomes 100% saturated with oxygen, and the excess oxygen is dissolved
into the blood plasma, this allows the oxygen to be diffused into
the tissue at a much higher level.
What illnesses and injuries does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy improve healing and
recovery for?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 'supercharges' the blood's oxygen level and the increased
levels of oxygen drastically increase the natural ability of your
horse's body to repair damaged cells, grow new cells, and fight
infections. Because of the rapid healing effects of concentrated
oxygen levels, Oxygen Therapy can play a vital role in helping your
horse recover from:
- Serious and chronic infections
- Wounds and blood-deprived tissue
- Compromised skin grafts
- Air and gas embolisms ("bubbles")
- Clostridial myositis
- Speed healing of selected injuries
- Aid in recovery from carbon monoxide poisoning, smoke inhalation
- Accelerate collagen deposition
- Treatment of bone infection
- Treatment of gas gangrene
- Post-operative colon torsions
- Laminitis
- Gastric ulcers, colitis and intestinal diseases
- Lung and abdominal abscesses
- Birth asphyxia ('dummy foal' syndrome)
- Skin, muscle, tendinous and ligamentous injuries
How long does it take to treat my Horse with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
A typical treatment session lasts from one to two hours and is a comfortable,
painless experience for your horse. In fact, most horses actually
fall asleep during the treatment. Does my Horse have to travel to a special medical facility for Oxygen Therapy?
While we welcome you to visit our Florida facility there's actually no reason
for you to put your ill or injured horse through a long trip. Equine
Rapid Recovery uses a mobile Hyperbaric Chamber that we trailer
throughout North America all year long. You can meet us at one of the
many riding or rodeo events that we attend or we can arrange to come
directly to you.
